Swimming!!

Well, it’s true and I have the proof:

Swimming in Silverstrand

I went swimming in Silverstrand (a beach near Galway).

I wonder why the Spanish and the Portuguese guys were the last ones in :-D

The water was cold but the weather quite nice, everybody says it was strange :)

Galway @ Virtual Earth

Nice view of Galway. Too bad about the owners :)

A Bird’s eye view of Lisbon is also available in Microsoft Virtual Earth.

Day 2

Today I went into DERI around 10:00 (no, today was not a holiday in Ireland, but Monday is ;) ). After some setting up, I had a computer waiting for me (rather old so I’m just gonna wait for a new one :D ) and an external screen. I’ll try to post some pictures of the work environment, I think it’s very nice a small room, not to many people, with large windows (gladly the light doesn’t reflect on my screen ;) ), unlike the guys on the third floor that have large rooms with dozens of guys.

After some introducing around it was time for lunch (very bad and very expensive :( ) and then I went into town and to the Universities Human Resources department. Very nice people (like all Irish) that we can tell are very used to receiving foreign persons: gave me a list of things to do and wrote the necessary letters to get things done. I also signed my 2 month Research Assistant contract (exactly the same as in Portugal) and to get it all finished I just need to open a Bank Account, get a PPS number (Social Security) and register for taxes. Seems to be hard without having a confirmed address but I’ll try tomorrow.

On the confirmed address part, I spent the rest of the afternoon looking at rooms and found 2 very nice (and the owners are brothers, lol!) and tomorrow I’m checking one with some other DERIans :)

First post.. from ireland

Yesterday was the day of the move to Galway, Ireland. A long day!

Started early since I had to be in Lisboa arround 8.30. The plane left about 30 minutes late and I got to Dublin near 14:00. Just enough time to find out where to take the bus to Galway and get there. Finally I arrived at the bed and breakfast at 19:00h. Just in time to go have dinner (btw, they must be like people from Alentejo: I asked for somewhere close to eat and was pointed to a place that was supposed to be 5 minutes out! Maybe driving because I walked for half an hour.)

I then headed for the town center to meet up with some of the guys from DERI. It was Thomas‘s going away party (and apparently my welcoming party). Only got back to the BnB around mid-night almost asleep.

P.S. This post was supposed to go out in the morning but it’s only being posted now, so.. another long day.
